CAPABILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
The Village of
Key Biscayne is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on its east side
and Biscayne Bay on the remaining 3 sides. Because Key Biscayne
is a tourist and water oriented recreational haven, marine
traffic around the island is heavy, particularly on weekends.
Therefore, the Key Biscayne Police Department Marine Unit, in
conjunction with the Miami-Dade Police Department Marine Unit,
is responsible for law enforcement and rescue activities on the
waterways in and around the island of Key Biscayne and the
Village of Key Biscayne. The Unit assists the United States
Coast Guard with "Homeland Security" and the United States
Customs Service with illegal narcotics interdiction, and illegal
alien smuggling interdiction. The Unit also maintains patrol and
surveillance of water front properties on Key Biscayne.
The Key Biscayne
Police Department is extremely proud of it's Marine Unit. The
Team consists of two experienced marine certified sworn police
officers of which one is a certified diver. To be a member of
the Team, an officer must have at least one year of experience
with the Key Biscayne Police Department. The officers then go
through rigorous training programs sponsored by the United
States Coast Guard and The Florida Marine Patrol.
The Marine Unit
utilizes a 25 foot Contender powered by twin Yamaha 150 hp
outboard engines. The Contender is equipped with GPS and all
other required marine, navigation, and safety equipment.
